Bikes
The city bike scene has gotten a bit crowded, hasn't it? But Giant's Escape 2 Disc rises above the noise with a no-nonsense machine that delives solid value for money.
A lightweight aluminum frame and alloy fork are just the starting points for this useful bike. Tektro cable-operated disc brakes make stopping in the rain much less terrifying. Shimano shifters and derailleurs make gear changes quick and precise. A 48/38/28T triple crankset and 14-34T Shimano cassette brings a huge gearing range to the Escape 3 Disc, making it perfect for grocery runs in hilly terrain. Alloy wheels and puncture-resistant S-X3 700x38c tires offer a smooth ride feel, while alloy cockpit components keep the Escape 2 Disc's overall weight nice and low. A comfy saddle tops off a great machine for everyday riding!
Checkpoint's aluminum-framed ALR 5 represents Trek's commitment to riders looking for freedom and adventure, but who also look for value.
The Checkpoint ALR 5 combines rugged construction, a responsive feel, versatile design and a new geometry for riders looking to discover (or rediscover) adventure cycling. The frameset of the Checkpoint ALR for 2022 is slightly different with a slightly longer top tube and correspondingly shorter stem and handlebar reach. Mountain bike designers call this "progressive geometry", allowing better control on gravel-strewn descents. A change to the fork rake ensures the nimble handling of previous Checkpoint bicycles hasn't changed. An upright fit allows a wider range of riders -and rider flexibilities- to get comfortable. The 300 Series Alpha aluminum frame features tapered and butted tubes created by hydroforming, keeping weight low while adding plenty of strength. There's room for tires up to 45mm (!), depending on rim width. A tapered head tube/steerer tube interface also adds handling precision while traversing rough surfaces. There's more strength to be found at the threaded T47 bottom bracket that all but eliminates power-robbing flex at the crankset. A 3S chain keeper, Control Freak internal cable routing, and accessory mounts from stem to stern demonstrate how much this bike is ready for expeditions across town or across the state. There are even mounts under the top tube for a direct-mount frame bag.
Shimano's proven 11-speed GRX components are built for riding all day in the rough stuff, and are found throughout the Checkpoint ALR 5. Adjustable-reach dual-control levers, a clutch-equipped rear derailleur, toggle-pivot front derailleur, flat-mount disc brakes and a redesigned 46/30T compact crankset are all Shimano GRX components. An 11-34T Shimano cassette boasts a huge gearing range for tackling challenging terrain. Tubeless-ready alloy Bontrager Paradigm wheels are wrapped with Bontrager GR1 Team Issue 700x40c tubeless-ready gravel tires, offering easy acceleration and confident grip in a wide range of surfaces. Shimano GRX hydraulic disc brakes bring effective stopping power to the Checkpoint ALR 5 in all conditions, rain or shine. A Bontrager P3 Verse Comp saddle sits atop an alloy Bontrager seatpost, while an accessory-ready Bontrager Elite Blendr stem and flared alloy Bontrager Elite Gravel road handlebars with a 13 degree flare complete this capable machine.
The Devote Advanced 2 isn't a repurposed cyclocross bike with wide gearing and wider tires. It's all about speed and smoothness in rough conditions for hours on end.
Liv's new Devote Advanced 2 is designed with geometry unique to the line. Stability came first with the Devote Advanced 2, giving the rider confidence when the riding surface changes for the worse, frequently with no warning. The low bottom bracket keeps the rider's center of gravity low, allowing the rider to feel "in the bike" and between the wheels, rather than just perched on top. A more upright fit was needed for riders that are more interested in simply completing challenging rides and events rather than winning them.
The frame and fork of the Devote Advanced 2 is built with Giant's Advanced-grade Composite carbon fiber, ensuring feather-lightness and impressive torsional strength. The Advanced-grade carbon fiber "recipe" soaks up fatiguing vibration, allowing a rider to cover longer distances in comfort. A tapered OverDrive head tube/steerer tube enhances the bike's handling precision, especially in fast turns and descents. The chainstays have an almost droopy look to them, allowing very wide tires to be used (up to 45mm!) when tackling terrible gravel. The Devote Advanced 2 can also take 650B wheels if that's your preference (wheelset and tires sold separately). 12mm thru-axles not only ensure proper disc brake alignment, but also improve overall torsional strength for improved handling. A press-fit PowerCore bottom bracket anchors the crankset, providing flex-free power delivery with every pedal stroke. Internal cable routing keeps the bike looking clean and sleek as well as extending shifter cable life in dirty conditions. The usual bottle cage mounts are found in the main triangle, but a third bottle mount is found under the down tube for especially long and hot rides. Cool, huh? Giant's clever D-Fuse Composite carbon fiber seatpost soaks up hard impacts with up to 12mm of flex, enhancing ride quality further.
Shimano's excellent 11-speed GRX components are found throughout the drivetrain of the Devote Advanced 2. The adjustable-reach GRX levers feature an improved hood shape and texture, keeping the rider's hands fresher over broken jeep double-track. The new long-cage GRX rear derailleur is a Shadow-style unit, enhancing shifting performance under load. It even has a 34T large cog capacity. The GRX front derailleur is a new toggle-pivot unit, reducing the effort needed to shift to the large chainring. Cable tension can even be adjusted from the derailleur, eliminating the need for in-line barrel adjusters. Praxis supplies the alloy Alba 2D crankset with a 48/32T chainring combination, bringing incredibly low gearing to the Revolt Advanced 2. Out back, a Shimano 105 rear cassette boasts an 11-34T gearing range. Yes, that's less than a one-to-one ratio for the crazy-steep climbs while loaded down with gear!
Giant's own P-X2 Disc alloy wheels are tubeless-ready and are wrapped with tubeless 700x40c CrossCut AT 1 tires that dig into dirt with aggressive tread. Helping to keep speed in check is a pair of GRX hydraulic disc brakes. An Approach saddle sits atop the aformentioned D-Fuse seatpost, while an alloy Contact stem and alloy Contact XR D-Fuse road handlebar completes the cockpit of this expedition-ready bicycle.
"Townie bike" just isn't the right label for the Escape 2 Disc. It looks too good, it's just too quick, and you'll want to ride it just for fun!
The Escape 2 Disc checks plenty of boxes for an around-town runabout. It boasts light weight with an ALUXX-grade aluminum frame, alloy fork and aluminum wheels. Shifting is smooth and quick with Shimano 8-speed shifters and derailleurs. A lightweight 46/30T crankset and 11-34T Shimano cassette offer a wide gearing range for challenging hills and hauling bulky groceries. 700x38c S-X2 semi-treaded tires add confident grip on pavement and gravel alike. Trips in the rain can be worry-free with Tektro's hydraulic disc brakes to bring excellent stopping power in all conditions. A comfortable saddle sits atop an alloy D-Fuse seatpost, providing a comfortable perch for day trips. Mounts for racks, fenders and bottle cages make the Escape 2 Disc a practical bike as well as a sleek and stylish machine.
