The Boone 5 is the result of years of testing in the mud and slop found in professional cyclocross racing.
Cyclocross is a terribly rough environment for a bicycle: Abrasive mud, clouds of dust, intense efforts and the occasional unplanned landing in the grass. Trek's first-gen Boone went through that environment on its way to Pan-Am and national championship victories. Now the Boone has been revised and updated with technology from Trek's road bikes for even better performance.
The ultralight frame material is the same -Trek's exclusive 600 Series OCLV carbon fiber- but the refined frame design gives the new Boone an even smoother feel and improved power transfer to the rear wheel. The 2019 version of the Boone now features 12mm thru-axles on both ends rather than the QR rear and 15mm thru-axle front from the last generation. This reduces overall weight and improves torsional strength at the rear triangle for hard efforts out of tight corners and up steep inclines. The E2 tapered head tube and BB90 bottom bracket remains as well, preserving handling and power transfer respectively. The rear IsoSpeed decoupler and Ride Tuned seat mast are forehead-slapping works of genius, allowing the frame to flex vertically over rough surfaces. By adding a second IsoSpeed decoupler (also seen on the Domane SL and SLR road bike) at the top of the head tube, the Boone's ride quality has been "evened out" for a better feel over long gravel excursions. Little details like an adjustable 3S chain keeper and Control Freak internal cable management make the Boone an even better choice for a long service life. The Boone's flattened top tube is easy to grasp and more comfortable to shoulder on run-ups.
SRAM's 11-speed Rival levers and Rival rear derailleur bring a positive feel to gear changes, even under hard pedaling loads. An 11-32T SRAM cassette and single ring SRAM Rival 40T crankset delivers a wide gearing range for tackling roller-coaster courses. Bontrager's tubeless-ready alloy wheels are shod with 700x32c Bontrager CX3 Team Issue cyclocross tires, adding race-ready rolling stock to the Boone 5. Helping to reign in speed is the job of SRAM's Rival hydraulic disc brakes installed on flat-mount hardpoints on the frame and fork. Disc brakes boast excellent lever feedback and functionality in wet and sloppy conditions.
A Bontrager Montrose Comp saddle, accessory-ready Elite Blendr stem and alloy Race VR-C road handlebar complete this competition-ready machine.
