With deep-section wheels comes easier speed on flat ground. But Zipp wanted to produce a wheel that had more going for it than just a tall profile. They wanted to produce the fastest deep-section wheel they could in a wider range of wind conditions.
With an 82mm rim depth, the Zipp 808 wheelset was going to be a challenge when it came to crosswind resistance. Zipp's design team used Computational Fluid Dynamic (or CFD) software to produce a bullet-nosed rim design that reduced turbulence in gusty conditions. When they settled on a handful of rim profiles, they produced wind tunnel prototypes and were astonished at the final results. The Zipp 808 was the fastest deep-section wheel ever made up to that point! The Zipp 808 features a dimpled surface mimicking that of a golf ball. They called this surfacing treatment ABLC, or Aerodynamic Boundry Layer Control. WIth it, the Zipp 808 is able to reduce instability in windy conditions, allowing a rider to stay in an aero position longer. The carbon fiber rim itself is manufactured in Indianapolis, ensuring the highest quality control.
Zipp's 77/177 hubs are 11-speed ready, but that's not the only upgrade for the 808's hubs. A new straight-pull spoke lacing reduces the liklihood of broken spokes, and the Sapim CX-Sprint bladed spokes enhance the wheeset's aerodynamics even further. Radial spoke lacing is used on the front wheel, while a 2-cross lacing is used on the rear for improved ride quality, durability and pedaling response. A pair of Zipp 808 Firecrest Clincher wheels weighs 1885 grams. Rider weight limit is 250 lbs.
