Lightness and aerodynamics can go hand in hand. The Emonda SLR 7 proves this! Trek knew that every road with elevation changes involves resisting the wind as well as resisting gravity. The Emonda SLR was built with the idea that a lightweight bicycle will still have to resist aerodynamic drag, even at low speeds. Since climbing is at the forefront of the Emonda SLR's design, Trek used their lightest-ever carbon fiber to build the frame: 800 Series OCLV. This new carbon fiber "recipe" is 30% stronger, resulting in razor-sharp handling and instant power transfer. The layup of different qualities of carbon fiber not only produce an ultralight frame, but also a smooth ride quality (a light bike isn't any fun if it rides like a chunk of granite). The frame still weighs less than 700 grams, and is built to accept flat-mount disc brakes. The engineers at Trek looked also at detailed frame shaping with Computational Fluid Dynamic (or CFD) software. The Emonda's Kammtail shaping allows the bike to cut through the wind effectively while still keeping overall weigh incredibly low. Even drag in crosswinds was analyzed to keep the bike stable at speed. Small details also helped with resisting drag:
- Internal cable routing alone saves you nearly 55 seconds over an IronMan distance event.
- An aperture in the left chainstay for a DuoTrap S speed/cadence sensor that eliminates the need for clumsy zip-ties
- Cable and brake hose routing through the headset's top cap
The Emonda SLR retains the proven features from previous generations of Emonda bicycles, like the no-cut Ride Tuned seat mast and cap. The bike's stage race geometry remains, making the Emonda SLR an excellent choice for century riders and criterium competitors alike.
The Emonda SLR 7 comes equipped with Shimano's 11-speed electronic Ultegra Di2 shifting technology. Shifting performance is literally lightning-quick, and doesn't hesitate when changing gear under hard pedaling loads. Every shift is perfect. Every. Single. Time. The battery life is 900-1000 miles between charges, with the charging port tucked into the right handlebar end. A 52/36T Shimano Ultegra crankset is paired with an 11-30T Ultegra cassette, giving the Emonda SLR a generous gearing range for challenging courses and rides. The crankset itself is also shaped to be aerodynamic and is just as stiff as the previous generation for flex-free power delivery. The crankset is mounted in a threaded T47 bottom bracket for creak-free riding. Shimano's Ultegra Di2 levers feature an adjustable reach for smaller hands or when wearing thickly padded gloves. The Emonda SLR's Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes are a flat-mount design, improving pad wear and reducing the bike's overall weight. Disc brakes aren't just for stopping in the rain, they improve braking performance in all conditions, rain or shine.
Bontrager supplies the rolling stock on the Emonda SLR 7. The carbon fiber Aeolus Pro 37 wheels are wrapped with Bontrager's 700x25c R3 tires, giving the bike confident grip in high speed turns and descents. The wheels are tubeless-ready, and the Emonda SLR 7 can take tires up to 28mm. The overall shape of the Aeolus Pro 37's cut through the wind effectively, but tip the scales at a mere 1500 grams. Bladed spokes and DT Swiss 350 rear hub internals add a quality finishing touch to these race-ready hoops. Up front, the Aeolus RSL OCLV Carbon integrated aero bar/stem does its job of soaking up high-frequency vibration while keeping weight very low. Brake hose and cable routing is done with channels under the handlebar, rather than inside for convenient servicing. A Bontrager Aeolus Elite saddle completes this dream machine.
