When Trek's design team looked at how racing bikes were great for, well, racing, but not for long days in the saddle over rough pavement, they asked their pro racers how they could improve their best machines for a smoother ride. The designers asked the pros what they wanted for hilly, multi-hour races over rough and choppy pavement, or even cobblestones. The designers in Waterloo then added their revolutionary technology that soaks up low- and high-frequency vibration: Trek's IsoSpeed decoupler. Found at the junction of the seat tube and top tube, the IsoSpeed decoupler allows the seat mast to flex much more freely, improving frame compliance and reducing rider fatigue. The latest version of the IsoSpeed unit is adjustable, allowing riders of different weights to dial in the perfect feel. A damper has been added to the rear IsoSpeed unit, keeping the bike from feeling like a pogo stick on washboard surfaces. Up front, there's an IsoSpeed unit at the top of the head tube, soaking up impacts on the way to the handlebar. The Endurance Geometry and fit of the Domane series is more upright, allowing a wider range of riders -and rider flexibilities- to get comfortable for long hours in the saddle.
Trek's proprietary 700-series OCLV carbon fiber is used throughout the frame, minimizing excess resin use while keeping consistent weights throughout the manufacturing process. The Domane SLR's massive down tube is shaped using Power Transfer Construction, making the bike incredibly stiff for uphill, out-of-the-saddle sprints. A tapered head tube and all-carbon fork add a precise feel to the Domane's handling, especially during high-speed descents. Anchoring the bottom bracket is an oversized threaded T47 bottom bracket, adding another level of rigidity for instant pedaling response. Internal cable routing keeps the Domane SLR 7 looking clean and sleek. The Domane SLR has hidden fender mounts and eyelets, allowing the bike to be a versatile commuter, as well as a century-conqueror. A storage compartment for a repair kit has been added to the frame's down tube, all but replacing the ubiquitous seat bag. An aperture for a ANT+ DuoTrap S speed/cadence sensor (sold separately) is found in the left chainstay, eliminating the need for clumsy zip ties. Rough roads can bounce a bike around, but the Domane's integrated 3S chain keeper prevents dropped chains (especially at critical moments on pave').
The frameset is pro-level, and so is the Domane SLR 7's component list: Shimano's latest 12-speed Ultegra Di2 series. Unstoppable reliability, incredible performance and light weight are just a few of the descriptions given some of Shimano's best components. Ultegra Di2 components are found throughout the Domane SLR 7: Ultegra derailleurs, 50/34T compact crankset, adjustable-reach dual-control levers, 11-34T cassette, chain and hydraulic disc brakes. The dual-control levers are connected wirelessly to the 12-speed derailleurs (yes, 12 speeds) and the rechargeable battery mounted inside the frame. With Di2 shifting, every shift is perfect. Every. Single. Time. The new dual-control levers feature stepped shift buttons, making shifts more intuitive when wearing full finger gloves. Battery life is roughly 900-1,000 miles between charges.
Bontrager adds their brilliant Aeolus Pro 3V carbon fiber wheels to the Domane SLR 7's parts list. OCLV carbon fiber is used throughout the rim construction, ensuring a durable wheel as well as very light weight. The rim's Dual Directional Design -or D3- profile reduces drag while handling gusty crosswinds more effectively than a V-shaped profile. The Pro 3V's 25mm inner rim width allows the tire to spread out for a larger "footprint" on broken pavement, enhancing lateral grip. The Aeolus Pro 3V's bladed spokes add an extra dash of aerodynamic performance. Tubeless-ready Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite tires in a generous 700x32c size boast low rolling resistance and confident grip.
The Domane SLR 7's "furniture" was scrutinized to keep the rider comfortable. Bontrager supplies the OCLV carbon fiber Pro IsoCore handlebar that reduces vibrations. The elastomer material built into the handlebar's structure soaks up vibrations from the road by 20% over a standard carbon fiber bar. An accessory-ready alloy Bontrager Pro Blendr stem and Bontrager Verse saddle complete this century-conquering masterpiece.
A Shimano Di2 charging cable and BITS tool storage bag is included with the purchase of this bicycle.
