Shimano's electronic shifting, IsoSpeed technology, disc brakes and carbon fiber construction make this the state-of-the-art in a road bike.
The Domane SL 7 Disc might be the best bike in its class. Trek's outstanding 500 Series OCLV carbon fiber makes the Domane SL 7 a solid performer: Feather-lightness, incredible torsional strength, sublime ride quality and industry-leading durability. The overall fit -called "Endurance Geometry" with a more upright posture- lets a wide range of riders and rider flexibilities get comfortable on day-long rides over rough roads. The real genius of the Domane carbon fiber road bikes is, of course, IsoSpeed technology. The seat tube and no-cut seatmast are held to the rest of the frame with a pair of cartridge bearings and a pivot at the seat tube/top tube juncture. This allows the Domane SL 7 Disc to absorb impacts better than any road bike out there. Railway crossings and potholes are no longer tooth-rattling experiences. IsoSpeed tech is even found at the top of the head tube, giving the handlebars an extra few millimeters of flex when hitting rough and choppy pavement. Cool, huh? If riding up steep hills is a regular thing where you live, the Domane's Power Transfer Construction eliminates power-robbing flex, especially during out-of-the-saddle efforts. The frame's dropouts are 12mm thru-axles instead of classic "open" dropouts, making wheel installation simple with disc brakes. The thru-axles also anchor the frame's rear triangle and fork tips, adding an extra dash of pedaling response and handling sharpness. There's room for tires up to 32mm wide, giving the Domane SL 7 versatility over ugly surfaces and a wider range of tire choices. An aperture for a DuoTrap S speed/cadence sensor (sold separately) in the left chainstay makes for clean installation without clumsy zip-ties. An adjustable 3S chain keeper helps prevent dropped chains, roadside stops and greasy fingers.
Shimano's recently updated 11-speed Ultegra Di2 components -now referred to as R8070- feature several refinements for a more user-friendly feel, better performance and more precise operation:
- More positive clicks with each shift on the dual-control levers
- More comfortable texture on the reshaped Di2 lever hoods, plus programmable buttons under the peaks of the hoods
- More aerodynamic Shadow-style Ultegra Di2 rear derailleur
- Larger 34T rear cassette cog capacity on the Ultegra Di2 long-cage derailleur
- Improved aerodynamics on the 50/34T Ultegra compact crankset without adding weight or reducing rigidity
Shimano's Di2 electronic shifting is completely hassle-free, and doesn't mind if you needed to shift to an easier gear 20 yards back. It'll shift perfectly. Every. Single. Time. The front derailleur even trims itself automatically. The Di2 battery is carried inside the frame, and is charged at the junction box under the stem. A single charge can last up to 900-1000 miles, depending on usage.
The Domane SL 7 Disc for women runs Bontrager's Aeolus Pro 3 carbon fiber wheels, giving the bike immediate acceleration and a smooth ride. With Bontrager's D3 approach to aerodynamics, the 35mm rim profile still slices the air effectively, but also remains stable in gusty crosswinds. Whether the rim or the tire is leading through the air, the same low drag numbers appear. The rim's 19.5mm interior width allows the tire to produce a wider contact patch on the pavement, adding lateral grip and reducing rolling resistance. They're tubeless-ready as well, all but eliminating flats with the right tires, sealant and gasketed valve stems. 700x32c Bontrager R2 Hard-Case Lite tires complete the Madone's rolling stock. Bontrager also brings their IsoCore VR-SF carbon fiber road handlebar to the game.
