The Trek Domane has come of age, and cyclists everywhere are finding it to be a versatile choice for more kinds of riding. The 2019 Domane SL 6 is produced in a disc brake version, making it an excellent choice for rough surfaces and rainy excursions.
The adventurous rider looking to cover ground on more than plain old pavement needs a smooth ride quality and room for wider-than-usual tires. When the terrain isn't flat, the bike also needs to be very light on the hills with effective brakes for safe descending. The Domane SL 6 Disc checks all those boxes exceptionally well. The lightweight frame is built from Trek's 500 Series OCLV carbon fiber, ensuring very low weight while retaining incredible torsional strength. A tapered E2 head tube adds handling precision in high-speed corners and hard braking. The Domane SL 6's Power Transfer frame construction and press-fit BB90 bottom bracket reinforce the already-rigid OCLV carbon fiber material, eliminating energy-robbing flex at the crankset. It's a perfect design for uphill, out-of-the-saddle charges. The 12mm thru-axle hubs add another anchor point for the frame and fork, helping with high-speed handling and pedaling response.
When rough roads are barely "roads", and gravel surfaces are covered in potholes, the Domane SL 6 Disc is ready. The IsoSpeed decoupler found at the seat tube/top tube juncture isolates the seat tube from the rest of the frame with a pair of cartridge bearings and an alloy pivot. The Domane SL 6's seat tube runs through the IsoSpeed decoupler to end in a no-cut Ride Tuned seat mast and cap, rather than a conventional seatpost and frame. This allows the Domane's seat tube to be engineered to be much more compliant over rough and choppy pavement than any other endurance road bike. But Trek didn't stop there. They added a front IsoSpeed decoupler to the top of the head tube and steerer tube, reducing harshness and vibration to the handlebars by adding about 1cm of flex at the brake lever hoods depending on stem length. All these design elements allow any rider to stay fresher for longer, making every ride that much more enjoyable.
Shimano's recently redesigned Ultegra components share design cues from their top-end Dura-Ace line. More of a refinement than an outright revolution, the "R8000" series of Ultegra components make the riding experience more about the ride, rather than how to simply operate the bicycle. Several improvements were made over the previous 6800-series:
-Stiffer, more aero asymmetric drive-side crankset for improved power delivery
-Redesigned Shadow-style long-cage rear derailleur allows up to an 11-34T cassette
-Redesigned front derailleur required less hand strength to shift to the larger chainring
-Greater adjustability of lever reach for different hand sizes
-Shorter lever throw for upshifts and downshifts
-Improved lever hoods and smaller grip diameter for improved comfort, brake control and feedback
-Flat-mount hydraulic disc brake calipers allow for a lighter frame design and more even pad wear
-Shimano "Freeza" brake rotors disperse heat better with stainless steel braking surfaces
Bontrager's disc-specific Paradigm wheelset bring a wider rim profile to road cycling, improving the tire's contact patch with the road. Lower rolling resistance, improved ride quality and more confident cornering are found with a wider 23mm rim. Stacked lacing adds to the wheel's lateral rigidity for added handling precision. The alloy wheels are tubeless-ready, allowing much lower tire pressures over uneven roads and hardpack surfaces. 700x32c Bontrager R2 Hard-Case Lite tires offer a smooth ride as well as excellent handling and grip. The Ultegra 50/34T crankset and 11-34T Ultegra cassette bring a massive gearing range to the Domane SL 6 Disc.
