Clipless pedals can allow an unexpected increase in performance for any bicycle. By selecting road pedals over mountain pedals (and heavier, softer mountain shoes), power transfer is improved over every pedal stroke. Triathletes, time trial racers, competitive and recreational road cyclists can all benefit from pedals that deliver flex-free power delivery. The pedal-to-cleat interface found with Shimano's SPD-SL pedals offers a large surface area to deliver power when compared to mountain bike cleats and pedals. That large cleat and binding also makes clipping in easy to learn, espcially with the adjustable binding release. A 2.5mm allen wrench is all that's needed to make the cleat easier or harder to release and engage.
The PD-R550 pedal body is made from a carbon composite material that is lighter than aluminum and just as durable. The tapered edge offers a 34 degree pedaling clearance; useful when pedaling through a shallow curve. Stainless steel inserts protect the pedal body from accumulated dirt collected on cleats. The included cleats are Shimano's SH-SM11 "yellow" cleats that offer 6 degrees of float when engaged into the pedals. 3-bolt installation hardware is included. Total weight for a pair of pedals: 310 grams
