Recumbents are an excellent choice for riders looking for a smooth ride and better stability than a classic two-wheeled machine. What happens when you add an extra wheel on the front? Everything gets better, smoother and -if you want- faster, thanks to Bosch's Active Line Plus electric power-assist motor and 400 Wh battery. The Bosch Purion display is easy to read, and allows the user to increase or decrease the level of assistance with the touch of a button. The Active Line Plus motor smoothly delivers up to 50Nm of torque, ensuring there are no surprises for first-time users. Range, charge level and speed are also displayed. The Bosch battery can be detached for recharging with the included home charger. A top assisted speed of 20mph will get you over hill and dale with ease!
Catrike has been building "tadpole" recumbents for over two decades. The 5.5.9 is aimed at riders looking for a smooth ride quality over long distances, or just more comfort and stability compared to short-wheelbase two-wheeled recumbents. The frame is built from TIG-welded aluminum in Florida, keeping weight low and torsional strength very high for better handling and power transfer. The Bosch motor sits at the end of the crankset boom, making fit adjustments very easy. The rear wheel is a 26" size, allowing for easy selection of a favorite tire model. The extended chain on the 5.5.9 is guided under the seat by a TerraCycle idler pulley, keeping friction to a minimum and improving shifting precision at the rear derailleur. A comfortable seat is critical for any recumbent users, and the 5.5.9 features an adjustable padded seat than can be placed at angles between 44 and 51 degrees.
The drivetrain of any recumbent must have a wide gearing range to help tackle steep hills and inclines. SRAM supplies the indexed 11-speed TT bar-end shifter, making gear changes second nature and hassle-free. A SRAM 11-speed long-cage Apex rear derailleur operates with lightning-quickness, even under hard pedaling loads. An alloy crankset with 44T chainrings is matched with an 11-42T SRAM cassette, boasting a massive gearing range that matches well with the Bosch motor's power levels. The 5.5.9's alloy wheels are shod with fast-rolling Schwalbe Marathon Racer tires. The large rear 26x1.5" tire will roll over a given obstacle or railway track more smoothly, due to the shallower approach angle of the tire compared to a 20" wheel. Stopping power hasn't been forgotten on the 5.5.9. Avid's BB7 cable-operated disc brakes add confident braking power and lever feedback to the 5.5.9, even in wet and sloppy conditions. The brake levers themselves feature a locking function button to keep your Catrike from rolling off when parked on inclines.
Useful accessories come standard on the 5.5.9, including a rear fender, computer mount, rear view mirror and Bosch home charger.
The rider weight limit of the Catrike 5.5.9 is 275 pounds.
