When the trails go down hill, and you're eager to go faster, this is your machine. Trek's Slash 9.8 GX makes every gnarly descent a thrill ride!
Slash is all about control when attacking fast, technical, rocky descents. Climbing hasn't been forgotten about, though. Trek's proprietary OCLV Mountain carbon fiber frame helps bring the bike's overall weight down, making it an excellent choice on roller-coaster singletrack. Carbon fiber also provides immense torsional strength and durability for precise handling and long service life. Trek's Active Braking Pivot -or ABP- rear suspension geometry handles small bumps and big hits with equal aplomb. All this makes the Slash 9.8 series a perfect choice for backcountry riding and enduro racing. The details of the Slash 9.8 GX make it more appealing the closer you look.
The Slash 9.8's main triangle is OCLV Mountain carbon fiber, but so is the rear triangle. Most long-travel full-suspension machines are built with aluminum rear triangles for durability, but the Slash 9.8's OCLV Mountain carbon fiber keeps the overall weight even lower while substantially increasing the rear triangle's rigidity and rugged construction. Perfect for a smooth, confident feel on endless downhills on technical surfaces. Enhancing the strength of the "Chassis" are several more details:
- A tapered 1-1/8"-to-1-1/2" Tapered head tube/steerer tube interface provides razor-sharp handling in the twisties
- A Knock Block 2.0 integrated headset stop prevents the fork crown from damaging the down tube in the event of a crash
- The oversized Straight Shot down tube improves torsional strength for out-of-the-saddle efforts
- The reinforced threaded bottom bracket anchors the crankset for flex-free power delivery with every pedal stroke
- A magnesium upper rocker link resists lateral binding when attacking twisting trails, improving rear shock performance
- There's a clever internal storage compartment inside the downtube under the bottle cage mount for tools and a tire repair kit
- An extra down tube guard prevents damage from flying debris on the trail, or clumsy loading and transport while off the trail.
The suspension for the Slash 9.8 GX is equally impressive. Up front, an air-adjustable RockShox ZEB Select+ fork boasts 170mm of travel, making short work of stair-step descents and hard hits. The ZEB's new 38mm chassis improves torsional and lateral strength, adding an extra dose of razor-sharpness to every curve and turn, no matter how rough the surface is. A tuneable rebound and 110 Boost hub spacing makes the ZEB Select+ an excellent choice for day-long adventures on challenging singletrack. Out back, the latest RockShox Super Deluxe Ultimate shock is also air-adjustable with one-hand rebound adjustment and a Thru Shaft 3-position damper. When installed in the Slash 9.8 GX's ABP rear suspension, it brings 160mm of travel to the party. Unique Thru-shaft architecture enhances shock response to be much faster than any other suspension, enhancing control on uneven and technical terrain, especially when taken at speed. And speed is what the Slash 9.8 GX is all about.
The Slash 9.8 GX does more than just gravity-powered speed off road. It can handle climbs and twisting trails with the best of them. SRAM's 12-speed GX Eagle shifter and rear derailleur handle shifting duties across a massive 10-52T XG-1275 Eagle cassette. A single-ring SRAM GX Eagle crankset with an X-SYNC 30T chainring transfers power with flex-free efficiency. Tubeless Bontrager Line Elite 30 OCLV Mountain carbon fiber wheels feature rims with a 29mm interior width, allowing wide tires to perform better with a broader contact profile. A Rapid Drive 108 rear hub all but eliminates the "free play" delay between a turning crank and the rear hub engaging; useful when powering out of multiple technical turns. The tires are Bontrager's tubeless Bontrager SE4 Team Issue model. A cut-resistant Core Strength sidewall, aggressive tread and a 29x2.40" size make them ideal for unparalleled control on rocky, chunky singletrack. Equally impressive are the SRAM Code R 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes with massive rotors that perform in all conditions, rain or shine (or mud). A Bontrager Line Elite dropper post is operated with a bar-mount lever, while an alloy Bontrager Line Pro stem grabs the OCLV carbon fiber Line Pro handlebar with a meaty 35mm clamp. A Bontrager Arvada saddle completes this outstanding speed machine.
This is Trek's answer to the question: Who makes a world-beating cross-country mountain bike that can handle marathon-length events?
The Top Fuel 9.9 could be the best full-suspension XC racer on the planet. It's absurdly light at less than 25 pounds (!!) when set up tubeless. The main frame and rear suspension arms are all made from Trek's exclusive OCLV Mountain carbon fiber, bringing incredible strength to handle every pedal stroke over rough trails. Every aspect of the main frame has been optimised for high performance without adding pounds. The frame's Straight Shot downtube eliminates plenty of material while enhancing torsional strength. Don't worry, the fork crown won't whack the down tube during a crash, thanks to a clever Knock Block steerer stop at the top of the head tube. Out back, the Active Braking Pivot (or ABP) full suspension geometry isolates braking forces from suspension movement, so every gnarly downhill hairpin won't feel like a major test of your riding talents. Control Freak internal cable routing, a tapered head tube, and downtube-mounted Carbon Armor are examples of the details that make every Trek Top Fuel mountain bike a clear leader in XC racing machines.
The air-adjustable RockShox Pike Ultimate suspension fork helps to tame rock gardens and challenging course features with ease. 120mm of travel soaks up impacts, while a bar-mounted lockout twist-lever shuts off the shock when charging along hardpan and jeep doubletrack. The rear shock is also a RockShox Deluxe Ultimate unit, bringing 115mm of travel and the aforementioned lockout function.
Trek chose SRAM's best off-road drivetrain for the Top Fuel 9.9: 12-speed Eagle AXS. Yes, this is the wireless shifting SRAM drivetrain for mountain bikes. Powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, every shift is perfect. Every. Single. Time. The XX1 AXS rear derailleur can handle hard pedaling loads and poorly-timed shifts with ease. Plus, there's no shift cable or housing to get nasty in messy conditons! Cool, huh? A 10-50T SRAM Eagle rear cassette boasts a massive gearing range for roller-coaster trails and courses. Power delivery is done through a carbon fiber SRAM XX1 Eagle crankset with a 32T single direct-mount chainring.
Bontrager supplies the tubeless-ready OCLV carbon fiber Kovee Pro 30 wheelset. The 30mm-wide internal rim width allows the tire to spread out for better trail contact, enhancing lateral grip and lower rolling resistance. Boost110/148 thru-axle hubs improve lateral rigidity, while a Rapid Drive 108 rear freehub makes pedaling response lightning-quick. With a total wheelset weight of only 1500 grams (without tires or cassette), the Top Fuel 9.9 will leap out of corners and hairpins like a jackrabbit! Bontrager's 29x2.4" XR3 Team Issue tires are also tubeless-ready, bringing bags of grip to any trail surface. SRAM Level Ultimate hydraulic disc brakes boast excellent stopping power in all conditions, rain or shine (or mud).
The Top Fuel 9.9's RockShox Reverb AXS dropper post is just as high-performance as the rest of the bike. It's wireless, using a bar-mounted remote lever for clean installation, and uses the same rechargeable battery as the SRAM XX1 Eagle AXS rear derailleur. A carbon-railed Montrose Pro saddle, Kovee Pro stem, OCLV carbon fiber Line Pro handlebar complete this world-beating off-road racer.
A SRAM eTap AXS battery charger is included with the purchase of this bicycle.
This bicycle can be ordered through Trek's Project One program. Tens of thousands of color and component configurations can be ordered, making the Top Fuel 9.9 AXS uniquely your own. Please call for details.
Liv makes a strong case for value in a full-suspension trail machine. Kiss your ancient hardtail goodbye!
The ALUXX SL-Grade aluminum frame on the Intrigue 29 2 makes a stong case by itself. The shaped and tapered frame tubes help keep overall weight low while providing a strong platform for the rear Maestro suspension. The upper rocker arm in the Maestro suspension is a one-piece unit made from an Advanced Forged Composite material. It resists torsional twisting that would otherwise cause friction in the rear shock. The eyelets for the rear shock are set further apart in a Trunnion mount, improving the shock's bump response. At the rear of the upper rocker is a pair of two-position Flip Chips that can be reversed to change the bike's geometry. From upright and nimble to lower and slacker, the Intrigue 29 2 can be customized for the day's challenges. 125mm of rear Maestro suspension travel adds bags of grip over technical trails, while the air-adjustable Fox Float DPS Performance rear shock can be set up for a wide range of rider weights and skill levels. An air-adjustable Fox 34 Float Rhythm suspension fork adds 140mm of travel for confident handling in rock gardens and root "fun houses". A tapered head tube/steerer tube interface adds an extra dash of handling precision. Need a short standover height? The Intrigue's Small size needs an inseam of only 28.8" for a safe fit!
The drivetrain of the Intrigue 29 2 doesn't want to make you overthink your options. Shimano's single-ring SLX shifting lets you concentrate on the trail and brings 12 speeds to the party! The rear Shimano SLX cassette features a 10-51T gearing range paired with a Shimano SLX 30T single-ring alloy crankset. That will make even the most challenging trails seem less fearsome! Shimano's 12-speed SLX RapidFire Plus shifter and clutch-equipped SLX rear derailleur operate with lightning speed, even while under hard pedaling loads. Tubeless-ready alloy Giant AM 29 wheels boast a 30mm wide rim, allowing the tires to place a wider "footprint" on the trail for maximum traction. The wheels are shod with meaty 29x2.5" front/29x2.4" rear Maxxis Minion DHF (front)/Maxxis Dissector (rear) tires, allowing you to attack every trail with confident grip. All that makes the Intrigue 29 2 pretty capable at speed, but the rider and bike are only as fast as the brakes are good. Helping to reign in speed in all conditions (wet or dry), is the job of Shimano's 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes, bringing stopping power and excellent lever feedback to the Intrigue 29 2. Big 203mm front/180mm rear rotors disperse heat and improve stopping power in all conditions, too. A Liv Sylvia saddle sits atop a alloy Contact Switch dropper seatpost, complete with bar-mounted remote lever. An alloy Contact SL 35 stem and alloy Contact Trail 35 handlebar completes this off-road trail conquerer.
