PowerTap Wheels The PowerTap power meter system is a proven piece of equipment that will help you train to be a stronger, more efficient rider. Developed by Saris here in Madison, WI, the PowerTap system allows an athlete to see how much wattage he or she is producing on a moment-to-moment basis. By incorporating wattage, heart rate and speed, a rider can find out how much energy is being used over a given distance or favorite ride. PowerTap hubs can be built with Shimano 8-, 9-, or 10-speed Shimano freehub bodies, or 8-, 9-, or 10-speed Campagnolo freehub bodies. Please clearly specify when ordering. Freehub bodies can be swapped at owner’s expense. If you are skilled at removal and installation of a freehub body, do not remove the torque tube of the hub. The heart rate monitor chest strap for use with the PowerTap SL 2.4 transmits a coded frequency and is not compatible with other manufacturer’s chest straps (i.e. Polar, Sigma, Trek, etc.) When purchasing the PowerTap SL 2.4, the rear hub can be selected with drilling for 20, 24, 28 and 32-spoke count wheels. Complete wheels PowerTap wheels can be built for you from the following manufacturers that we carry here at machinery Row Bicycles: Zipp and Bontrager. Yes, you can have a set of light, tough Bontrager Race Lite clincher wheels for your tri-bike put together with a PowerTap hub for performance training. You can even have a set of Zipp 404 carbon tubular wheels built up with a 416 gram PowerTap rear hub for that ultimate attack on your personal best at Ironman Wisconsin! Expensive? Yes, but you will probably never find a more useful race-day wheelset manufactured in the world today. PowerTap SL 2.4 The top of PowerTap’s line, and proven in ProTour competition. No wiring harness is needed, and the hub has a 2.4 Ghz coded digital transmitter to feed the unit all the information regarding your speed, power, cadence, etc. The customizable display has 3 lines. • The top displays power functions in current watts, average watts or maximum watts. • The middle shows current speed, average speed and max speed. • The bottom line will give you functions such as trip distance, trip time, time of day, odometer, and energy used in a measurement known as kilojoules. This is roughly equivalent to the number of calories expended on a given ride. Heart rate can also be displayed on this line as well as average heart rate for a given ride. Cadence can be shown by analyzing the stresses on the hub produced by the rider’s power on the bike’s crankarms. No rider has had such a smooth stroke as to fool the PowerTap hub, but the maximum cadence for the PowerTap to display is 240! PowerAgent software is included to help you analyze the information gathered by the head unit during your latest workout. Simply download the data via a USB cable to you PC or Mac (yes, Mac!) Up to 15 hours of ride data can be stored, so mega-mileage riders rejoice! You can keep track of your workouts and investigate interval stats to keep track of progress during the season. Only a few years ago, Formula 1 racing cars weren’t producing this kind of feedback to the race engineers! This form of precise power measurement can even tell you if you’re overtraining, and if you should take the day off. There is even a Training with Power DVD included with the PowerTap SL 2.4! Please refer to the Saris website for further details on the PowerTap SL 2.4 at http://www.saris.com PowerTap SL The PowerTap SL gives you all the same useful information as the SL 2.4. The SL has a wiring harness that many of us are familiar with that runs to the left chainstay for the cadence sensor. Another wire leads from the head unit to the “sharkfin” antenna that is mounted on the left seatstay near the rear hub. Up to 15 hours of ride data can be stored to be reviewed later on your included PowerAgent software. A Training with Power DVD is included as well. The PowerTap SL hub itself is still the same light 416 grams as the SL 2.4. PowerTap Pro You don’t need to be an elite-level triathlete or hard-core road racer to benefit from the PowerTap hub’s technology. You don’t even need to spend four figures to get PowerTap to help you train for the MS150 or the Tour de Cure. A PowerTap hub can tell you how much your riding is benefiting you as you pursue your cycling goals. The PowerTap’s memory can store up to 7 hours of riding data, so you can train for a full day in the saddle. The same wiring harness as found in the PowerTap SL is used for the PowerTap Pro. A Training with Power DVD is included. Precautions with your PowerTap: If you are custom-building a PowerTap wheel, do not slot the spoke holes. This will void the warranty. The PowerTap wheel or hub does not include a quick-release skewer. Please do not attempt to ride your wheel without one! They’re only a couple of bucks for a trainer-friendly version! There are no user-serviceable components, and removing it will void the warranty. Complete service instructions are included with the PowerTap, but consult a PowerTap dealer if you have any questions regarding any maintenance to the hub body itself. The non-drive side of the PowerTap SL and SL 2.4 hub must be built with at least a 2X lacing pattern. The PowerTap Pro hub must be only built with a 3X lacing pattern. Failure to do so will void the warranty. The PowerTab hub and head unit are water resistant, not water proof! Don’t submerge either part in water, so keep that in mind during messy cyclo-cross races, or really rainy spring days. Oh, and please keep your eyes on the road! The PowerTap may be fun while at speed, but it will remember your workout and tell you how you’re doing when you finish your ride.
