Orbea didn’t intend on making art when the Orca was in development, but the result has won three European design awards. The Orca’s designer, Miriam Bengoetxea frequently thought “out of the box” when approaching how a carbon fiber bicycle should be built. By tapering the wall thicknesses of the shaped tubing depending on the frame size, the Orca is made very torsionally rigid, but has excellent ride quality. Built with Toray’s most advanced fibers (M40J and high-modulus M30S), the Orca has utilized these materials with innovation and creativity. Little touches show Orbea’s commitment to detail: The head badge doubles as a cable stop, and the derailleur hanger is replaceable in the event of a crash. Designed as a bike for pro racers competing in the high mountains during multi-week stage races, the Orca had to be an efficient, lightweight and comfortable bicycle while still having very agile handling qualities. Used by the Euskaltel-Euskadi ProTour cycling team in the Tour de France, the Orca has proven itself at the pinnacle of cycling competition. Knowing that cyclists are a particular bunch, Orbea decided to offer the Orca with a way to custom build the parts kit on-line before actually requesting it from their dealer. Want it built with Shimano’s Dura-Ace, Campagnolo’s Record, or SRAM’s new Red components? Mavic wheels or Zipp wheels? Carbon or aluminum handlebars? What width will you need? The “Made to Order” section of the website will offer all the available options in an easy-to-use format. Our sizing and bike fit specialists will help you select the right options to fit you and your budget. Everyone interested in the Orca should take one for a rest ride. We have several in stock, and try to keep a full size run available at all times. We will also have the soon-to-be-released red color scheme. If you have an existing road bicycle, we encourage you to bring it with you so that we can duplicate its size and fit with the Orca within reason. Frequently, the ride will tell you everything you need to know that a web site or sales professional can only suggest. Machinery Row Bicycles can’t carry all Orbea frames in all colors and in every size. If you want a custom component group with the color of your choice, we will contact Orbea USA directly and fax your build specifications to them. The bicycle with the requested components will arrive in 4 to 6 weeks depending on immediate availability. Once it arrives, we will inspect and assemble it for you with any additional adjustments to be made for fitting. If you require a different component than was supplied for a more exact fit, we can substitute various parts. Keep in mind, there may be an additional cost if the component is a significant upgrade. Sometimes, a customer will return after as much as a month for a slight adjustment in fit to the bicycle. This can be the result of improved fitness or a change in flexibility.
