When mountain bike technology changes, Trek is ready to use that change to a rider’s advantage. The rise of single-ring drivetrains has allowed cross-country mountain bikes to become even lighter while reducing moving parts in the drivetrain. This concept is taken to the extreme with the new 2015 Superfly FS 9.8 SL.
The Superfly FS 9.8 SL uses a frame made from Trek’s own proprietary featherweight OCLV Mountain carbon fiber, making it incredibly rigid for ultimate control in twisty singletrack. An E2 tapered head tube anchors the fork for precise handling, while a press-fit BB95 bottom bracket ensures effective pedal response. Off-road riding can be done in messy conditions, so internal cable routing for derailleurs and the rear shock lockout cable reduces long-term maintenance. Even the down tube is protected from flying gravel by a removable Carbon Armor shield.
Keeping the bike tracking through rock gardens and putting the power down is the job of the rear suspension. Trek’s ABP (Active Braking Pivot) rear suspension geometry ensures that, no matter how hard the rider clamps on the rear brake, the rear suspension will fully function in all conditions and speeds. The seatstay is also OCLV carbon fiber for reduced weight and improved response. Connecting that seatstay to the rear shock is a one-piece Flow Mold carbon swing link that reduces weight further, and possesses incredible torsional resistance for perfectly functioning suspension. The rear shock itself is a Fox Performance Series 32 Float unit with a CTD (Climb-Trail-Descend) switch, providing 100mm of air-adjustable travel and a bar-mounted remote lockout switch. The front shock is another Fox product: A Performance Series 32 Float CTD fork with a bar-mounted remote lockout. 100mm of air-adjustable travel keeps the front tire planted in technical terrain, while the 15mm thru-axle adds to the bike’s precise handling.
The single-ring drivetrain revolution is found on this Superfly in the form of a SRAM X1 11-speed rear shifter, a SRAM X01 rear derailleur, a SRAM X1 X-Sync 32T crankset, and a 10-42T SRAM XG rear cassette. Yes, that’s it. Shimano’s XT hydraulic disc brakes keep speed reigned in, while a set of color-matched DT-Swiss X1700 tubeless-ready alloy wheels are shod with Bontrager XR1 29x2.2” Tubeless-ready tires for maximum grip. Bontrager also supplies the Ti-railed Evoke RXL saddle, carbon fiber seatpost, Race X Lite carbon Low Riser handlebar and alloy Race X Lite stem.
